500 word scene

“All we have to believe with is our senses, the tools we use to perceive the world; our sight, our touch, our memory.  If they lie to us, then nothing can be trusted.  And even if we do not believe, then still we cannot travel in any other way than the road our senses show us; and we must walk that road to the end.”  Neil Gaiman, English novelist

Did you know there are actually 8 senses?  Not just taste, hear, see, feel, smell, but there is also sense of time, sense of the unknown and sense of space.

When watching television, you get lots of stimulation that makes you believe what you see.  When you read you have to use other stimulation to make readers believe what you are telling them.

Thinking of your main character, use this as a chance to develop the senses to incorporate into your story, because these provide depth and realism in your writing.

Examples:

Sense of time- gives you an impression of what time of day your story is set.  The sun languidly rose into the sky

Sense of the unknown- is your character comfortable in their setting? The hairs on the back of his neck stood up or a sense of calmness washed over her as she lay down in the bath

Sense of space – where is your character? The cold walls echoed back the footsteps

Write a 500 word paragraph using all of the senses.  When you have finished, post it in the forum, and we will see if others can pick your use of the senses!
