OK, so I posted a new challenge, starting after the weekend - short notice I know, but I missed out on wwww and was a bit sad about that. I wanted to kick off my writing again post wedding with a good sprint of 5k in one week.
I love Urban Legends, I think they are so much fun!! I will be hopefully dreaming up a new one of my own and probably be telling it in the old style 'campfire' tales setting where one character is thinking about doing something and another relays the legend they have heard about.
Go Go, Sign up now! you know you want to.... ;-)

Urban legend. Is that about a local identity with a story about them, being told by someone?
Excuse my ignorance. :)

Urban legends... hmm best way to describe them, there are SO many. Things like... the killer in the backseat of the car, going on holiday, getting drugged and having your kidney stolen.... as wikipedia defines it: An urban legend or an urban myth is similar to a modern folklore consisting of stories thought to be factual by those circulating them. The term is often used to mean something akin to an "apocryphal story". Urban legends are not necessarily untrue, but they are often distorted, exaggerated, or sensationalized over time.
There are tonnes of them around, I saw the movie 'Urban Legend' when I was a bit younger, B grade slasher flick really (mind you, most slasher flicks are by definition B grade, part of why I love them).
Hope that helps some :-)

Also from wikipedia....:
Many urban legends are framed as complete stories, with plot and characters. Urban legends often resemble a proper joke, especially in the manner of transmission, but are much darker in tone and theme.

The compelling appeal of a typical urban legend are its elements of mystery, horror, fear or humor. Many urban legends are presented as warnings or cautionary tales, while others might be more aptly called "widely dispersed misinformation", such as the erroneous belief that a college student will automatically pass all courses in a semester if one's roommate commits suicide.

If you google it you'll get lots of different information, fun area. I love old folktales, so it's only natural I'd enjoy the more modern style ones as well

Thanks Cassie, I never thought of googling. I would have been on the wrong track as I was thinking of doing something on Burt Munro, or even Tim Shadbolt from a future time. But they are 'living legends,' I guess. :)

Yeah they are really, just not the kind I was thinking about :-) lol google is wonderful, I'm not sure what I did before! I guess encyclopedia's and things like that....I love that every time I come across something I don't know about I can punch in the right words and find out everything I could want to know - well, mostly lol.

I'm up for it. Brings back memories of school camps. I already have a tale in mind to use. I'm still not sure how much of it is or isn't true...

And that is the fun of it!!! Bound to be some truth, bound to be parts that are not... and who knows where that line is between reality and fiction?

neato, might write about the local legend I knew about at school..Yeah the old hitchhiker in the back of the car deal, every area has that one.
Are haunted houses seen as urban legend? I could write a nice one about a house I went too once.. hrmm anyone see Picnic At Hanging Rock, that house they used as a school (Martindale Hall) is meant to be haunted. and its a freaky place I never wish to visit again.

I read about Picnic at Hanging Rock, didn't see it though. I was thinking last night about where the line can be drawn as to Urban Legend - I think haunted houses would qualify, any stories about things which have supposedly happened around the place would fit the bill. Whether you put it in a real world setting or a fictional one is entirely your call!
Lots of 'horror' trade in these kinds of legends, like the amityville movies and things like that, houses built on tribal burial grounds, etc etc. Lovely stuff!

I'm going to leave you young ones to your horror, beasties and ghosties themes.
Have a new bucket of paint to get through for the second coat, so will tackle that next week, and have it finished before the 1st March.
Have fun you lovelies. :)

Life attacked!

My nice empty week became very full very quickly. Silly me and my habit of volunteering to do stuff. I'm not working on an info leaflet, website, flyer and video. Everything needs to be done by Tuesday.

Hrmm I started something that is totally useless and will need to do something else if I want to complete the challenge...LOL
Tho the good thing is I was told about snope.com which lists alot of online urban legends that I might look through and use.
I need another short story to shop around the magazines so hoping this one might be ok.
