It's Montana Poetry Day here today so I was just wondering if anyone had any poems (or excerpts) they would like to share here.

The house is crying
She feels my pain
I stare out from her eyes
Her vision clouded by tears of rain.
I see the world as she sees it
Unmoving, touched by time
The bleak day inferring
Death's slow walk along this street.
It's quiet in her mind
Only the distant pitter-patter
Of rain on her old metallic crown.
Her eyelids close, and darkness descends
Holding me deep within
Cocooned in the warmth of her mind
The clouds in my head begin to diffuse
As we relax, breathe in unison, and sleep.

and something more amusing. An Ode to one of my cats.

O Boris, my undeniable foster-cat,
conqueror of prime pillow placements,
subduer of all those who crawled,
walked or ran within these walls
before your unexpected arrival.

Russian named, for the thick,
honey blended furs you wear so proudly,
a fleece of gold even the Argonauts
would cross a thousand seas to claim,
if it wasn't for those burrs you don,
dotting your coat like badges of merit,
tokens from tours of our outer domain.

Ever battle-ready you prowl the
book bound parapets of my well worn desktop,
while I sit and ponder matters
of great and solemn import - blank pages
stretching out like a chasm threatening
to pull me in.

You flash me with limpid amber eyes,
catch my sight, my breath,
for a second before I return to my review,
and then pounce with Olympic grace,
towards my pen - prised from fingers
you chase it across the page,
tickling my nose with your over fluffy tail,
as if to suggest play and laughter,
were a more serious matter than study.

ooh Cassie they are lovely poems. Cats are like that when you are busy, and not paying them attention. Mine couldn't do that tickling of nose with the fluffy tail, as they are Manx cats. :)

They're really nice, cassie. Thanks for sharing. I haven't written poetry for a long time.

Andy - you are the master of the limerick! I remember your lunchtime limerick challenges. And what are limericks if not a poems?

It's rare that I like poems and my eyes glaze over when I read them (even yours Cassie - sorry, I'm a philistine).

There are a few that I like - a few of Shakespeare's sonnets (only the famous ones), and the odd love poem by Browning.

I have written some, but when I go back to read them, my eyes glaze over.

I think poems have just as had a time as any other form of fiction in grabbing and keeping your attention. They have to get a message across in such a small number of words.

I do have a book of NZ Poems. When I read more of it I'll let you know if there are any that grab me.
