Need some critiquers

Another writing forum I'm a member of is running a project where each member writes a story to go into an anthology that we're going to try to get published; I've done a first draft of my submissions before my exams, and would love it if someone (or several someones) could give me some srit on it for me to mull over before my post-exam rewrite (er... post-exam, post NaNo, that is).

I would love to critique it. I don't have time for a novella or anything, but I have plenty of time for a short story. At least until November that is :D

It's about 3700 words, fantasy in the style of a sort-of fable or fairy tale.
