Which ones are you looking at? I've done just about every paper involving writing through Massey University, but none of the other kinds of courses around.

Some say courses are not always beneficial as we all have our own writing style. Have a look on resourses on this site, there are various ones I've picked up ideas from, formatting etc. Holly Lisle for instance runs little workshops and sends you projects to work with.
Most are American on the internet, and doesn't fit with my style of New Zealand writing, I just write about what I know at present. Do Massey do a correspondence course Cassie? They can be expensive too. (I'm used to 'free fees' in Invercargill, but they don't do Creative Writing.) 27 Feb 2008 20:17:51

I didn't think of Massey, but I will visit their site. Did you enjoy the papers Cassie?
What I am looking at is the course run by NZIBS it appears to be comprehensive. Thanks for the info Gaye, I will certainly check out the resources. 27 Feb 2008 21:12:07 |

It was all towards my degree, they have a range of papers, creative writing, life writing, short stories, scripts, travel writing, writing for children, poetry, and there are others as well but it's early ;-) Yeah you can do them all through extramural study, and as far as I can recall none of the courses are compulsory, tho sometimes quite worthwhile. I doubt it would be the cheapest way to do a course though as Gaye-Belle mentioned.
As to whether I enjoyed them - some of them immensely, others, not so much. I think it's quite dependent on whether the way you write/want to write, matches with the way the tutor wants you to do things ;-) All were good learning curves, and being pushed out of your comfort zone is usually a good thing anyways. I haven't done the NZIBS one, have looked at it from time to time and it did sound decent, hopefully someone will be able to post and comment more on that one in particular. 28 Feb 2008 07:32:35 |

Hi kiwiheathen
I completed the NZIBS creative writing course five years ago. I found it really useful for the stage I was at with my writing. Basically I was just getting into it, I hadn't written a complete draft of a novel yet and really needed a lead into the industry. If you're interested I could probably pull out my old material to give you a more detailed idea of what they provide. 28 Feb 2008 23:08:01
