I think I'm decided on my SoCNoC novel with just three days to go and in fact have just outlined it below :-) But I need help as to what genre it fits into.

What do you think?

Synopsis

Computers don't run off electricity. They run because each and every one of them have some little people who live inside. The little people keep everything working from opening and closing gates, charging the batteries and moving all those teeny-tiny electrons around.

As it turns out 'Bit' and 'Byte' (who are twins and the logical opposite of each other) want to escape from their home computer. Through cunning tactics they switch, charge and spark themselves through the wires. Finally they manage to escape but unfortunately find themselves in the big bad "Outernet".

This is the adventure they have battling viruses, spy-ware, drive-by-downloads and ultimately come up against the SpamBot! They also find time to fix broken sites, help with compatibility problems and even spell check a webpage or two.

Their plan is to get back to 'localhost.localmachine', their own home. On their own, this would be a hard task (I mean, who can map-read through network switches anyway). But by making friends with other little people who can help them, they might just do it.

Ooohhh, tough one.
Science fiction sort of because the 'world' is set in the 'real world' but fantasy because the actual 'reality' is not real world. But then again, how do we know.
It sounds such a cool story. You must be itching to start.

SF/comedy? I wouldn't think fantasy.

Not fantasy, not sci-fi, definitely comedy.

I'd say it's a children's book. Fantastic idea.

You know I was leaning towards Fantasy because the little people are likes pixies, or dwarves, or some other such mysterious characters. Maybe I'll make up a whole new thing rather than calling them little people.

I am itching to start though that outline above is pretty much all the preparation I've done. :-)

Rethinking:

I say children because I don't know what it sounds like, only from the description you have (outernet is an awesome word).

It's certainly more advanced than "Bob the Builder", but I'm not sure if it's like "Flatland" or not - more accessible I think.

Maybe the early Harry Potter stuff is close, so childrens, but with possibility to get more adult if you need to.

I LOVE the idea. I'd think comedy and scifi rather than fantasy because of the technology elecment unlike Terry Pratchett's Carpet Men.

I also love the word 'outernet' and being the geek I am the other names you've called things are great fun too.

It could definately be children/young adult/adult, depending on what sites they stumble across. Perhaps a cyber nanny?

Love it. I am a computer illiterate, learn as I go, and by my mistakes.
I think I could learn a lot from this story. :)
I would say sci-fi/comedy, (children/adult.)

I talked to Una about this and she laughed immediately when I talked about it. It is a good idea, not matter what genre it ends up in I think.

Oh shoot! maggenpye, I would have so used that.

As it stands, they are called sparks which kinda suits the fact that they are just bundles of energy with no physical form.

Currently, my MC has never left his 'home' computer and really wants to go packet-surfing (travelling). He is soon to read a website called 1001 Computers You Must See Before You Die.
