He showed up last night, and as I'm writing fantasy that's all very well, I even had a wonderful realisation about how he fits into the whole story (and manages to tie up some historical mysteries in the process).
What I do need some advice with is this: In a fantasy novel which prior to the arrival of this large and somewhat stubborn dragon had no overt signs of magic, does there now need to be some kind of magic? Dragons are kind of magical aren't they? Can I get away with having dragons and no wizards/spell casters etc but only have racial dragon style power/ability? 31 May 2007 23:20:58 |

Even if it is a full blown, fire breathing dragon, "Reign of Fire" the movie did them without any wizards or magic. They tried a scientific explanation.
Dragons are usually magical, but you can make them anything you want to. 01 Jun 2007 00:55:44 |

Ok cool, thanks. For the life of me last night I could neither confirm nor deny that I knew of dragons where there was no other source of magic in the world... my brain just was not functioning. I know that before I went to sleep last night I had some kind of epiphany about it all but yeah... i can't recall that right now!!
Time to get writing. 01 Jun 2007 07:01:22 |

Nope, I dont think you need magic. I am going with the scientific explanation but without fire-breathing. Instead I wrote some general characteristics first, and rules of behaviour. Of course, they wont come in until at least half way through the story. Right now, my scientists think (wink wink)they are working on tuatara. (I had two story lines and I decided to go with this one)
The trick is that you dont need to work on science fact. Unusual abilities dont need to be explained. Just get your characters to accept things as if they were. The science of your world is what your characters believe it to be. wow - philosophy, must remember that. 01 Jun 2007 13:49:01

lol thanks for that. I know it's totally going to work now, and thats all good. I think pretty much that there will be a whole other side to the world thats been shut out of the city place my main characters live in, and as she gets further and further away from it she'll have some interesting revelations. It should come together quite well, quite different from anything I have written before... Now if only I could get my dragon to be quiet so I can write the half novel that leads up to his introduction!!! He seem's to think that the whole novel should be about him now that he's made an appearance.
