After my rather disastrous NaNo, when I ended up writing about Elizabethan fashion - a subject I know nothing about, you understand - I vowed to stick to what I know when it comes to writing.
Yet lo and behold, my Socnoc, which was on a subject I knew about, has morphed into an adventure involving boats. I barely know port and starboard, and yet I still managed to get myself into this positions. So, does anyone know anything about small early 20th century boats? 03 Jun 2007 12:07:17

Oh, what a shame, I know nothing about boating, but my forte is costuming.
I collect, and work in the industry. Never mind, I'm sure someone on here will be able to help. Good luck! 03 Jun 2007 12:24:28

Erm, no :-) But I'm sure you will by the end of it.
One thing I've noticed a lot of people say during SoCNoC is that the story has morphed, or gone in a different direction. Some people have said that they had no control in it either :-) I did the exact same thing in my first scene, but because it was so early, I (did a bad thing and) went back and changed it. It's much easier now. But as Travis says in his Klog entry, you just gotta keep moving forward. Maybe you could kill that scene or direction and get it back to where you want to be. 03 Jun 2007 12:26:43

When I'm not sure about things I do this [enter description here] lol and i plan on going back and fixing that all later!! You could use a different colour so it's easy to find when you're looking back and have the time to find the correct information?
I don't know anything about boats either... sorry! 03 Jun 2007 12:33:32 |

In one of my Nanos the characters were on boats practically the whole time. I know nothing about boats either, hah. The whole novel sounds incredibly stupid.

I've been on many boats - and also know nothing about them... perhaps your characters don't either? have them fluke sailing! or have a skilled character that never explains or never gets observed "sailing" - perhaps it can even be a plot point. They hire a captain, much as i would if i needed to make a boat do what i want.

I have spent much of my youth on boats, since my Dad is a fisherman from rural Canada.
I have rowed many kilometres before I turned 18, and I've never looked back since. Unfortunately, this is all late 20th century, not early, but I have also sailed, so ask and I'll do my best to answer. My experience is that you don't need to talk about the boat much. In one of the Raymond Feist books, he had a character who found himself on a boat and in charge and said that it just seemed to work if you tell the sailors to "go over there" or "stop dead" or things like that. :-) 03 Jun 2007 18:01:12 |

Well, I know the lingo (sort of), just not what it means. So I've got people casting lines over port, or going to take the tiller at the stern, or slumping down at the gunnels, it's just that I have no idea what I'm talking about. Hopefully no one else will, either, so I'll be able to get away with it.
I figured out how big I wanted my boat to be by pacing it out in my bedroom. I'm such a special creature :) 03 Jun 2007 18:43:40

Sounds like you are having fun. Worst case, you toss out a few questions and see if anyone knows. :-)

patupaiarehe, did you figure out how you were going to wing it or did you change the whole boat idea?
I love the way you said "I'm such a special creature." Made me laugh. 06 Jun 2007 22:25:18
