Newcomer here, from the Taranaki area. Heh, there's one person on this board that knows and me I thank her for bringing me on down here!

I been writing for far too long, and am one of those people who don't like writing too much, but have to do it (rather like breathing).

I've been published in various places under a few names. Most recently I got published in NZ for the first time in the Huia Short Story collection. It was mostly a huge thrill for me, because I didn't know if I could get published in NZ with the genre I write. I focus on short stories, but have a novel or two under my belt (unpublished).

What's my genre? Well, actually I was gonna reply to the post about having to stick to one genre. The novel I hope to get published is what I'd class as urban teen fiction (which I'd also say was the flavor of my Huia short story).

Having said that, I can't stick. Even my urban stuff goes magic realistic at points. I also like sci fi, horror, romance. In reply to the post on sticking to one, I say write what your heart tells you, and worry about the market later.

Long post shorter, hey all! Hope to make some new writing friends, and will no doubt dive head first into the discussion! Write on.

Hey there maui-potiki great to see you on board.
You sound very talented indeed. I agree about writing from the heart.
My nanawrimo story was set in and around your area. Travelling along the Whanganui River, through small towns, to the destination of Taranaki.

I tend to write NZ factual/fictional stuff with a Maori influence, for some reason, just what comes out of the head.

There will be plenty of short story challenges coming up, once everyone's got over the 'silly season.' :)

maui-potiki, is it Huia Short Stories 7 that you're published in? I saw it at Dymocks today in Wellington and I read all the names, so even if I don't know which one was yours I saw it! :)

Yes, it was in 7! It's called Save Point.

Thanks for the warm greeting all! And Taranaki has rather inspired me. I guess there will be plenty of strolling along sparkling shores in my upcoming stories. Actually, Pukekura Park inspired the setting of my Nanonovel. It's a beautiful city down here.

To be honest maui-potiki, I know little about your area. I visited New Plymouth once years ago. With a bit of research, I had my group in the story travelling from Wanganui to Raetihi, and then to the Rangiahau National Marae. Popped down to Jerusulem to visit one's grandfather's gravesite (J.K. Baxter). Back up for lunch at Pipiriki, on through the Waitotara Forest, got lost in the bush, came out on the Puniwhakau Road to Strathmere. They sort of went to The Bridge of Nowhere to the Bridge of Somewhere. Interesting history.
I feel like I want to visit the area now. :)

You should! It's probably one of the most beautiful places I've lived, save where I grew up in the far North.

Yeah, I love Taranaki too. I've done two half marathons in New Plymouth and it's great. The first half is mostly uphill but the second half is mostly downhill.

Anyway, welcome maui-potiki, hope you enjoy it as much on the site as you do where you live :-)
