Nathan Bransford has a blog that I love to read. Here, he gives an example of a query letter that really hooked him and kept him interested.

It is worth a read, very smooth and, as he says in the follow-up comments, flows well.

Mines a little longer than that.

I would like to submit my latest novel Darkness. It is about106,000 words and is a horror novel containing elements of Dark Fantasy. The book takes place within 24 hours and is told in real time. I have attached my credits at the end.

Evolution is about to take a huge jump.

Blurb:

In 2007, Agent Baxter pursues the entity, Darkness, following an accident that slew Doctor Hayden's wife and son. Dr. Hayden studied the Darkness without realizing it was studying him. Shadows, however, have a way of vanishing into light and the entity flees the compound where Hayden thought it was contained.

In 27 B.C. a peaceful man's family is slaughtered before his very eyes, turning his life upside down and bringing forth a leader. A leader who will drive an army into the bowels of hell for vengeance. At the moment of his death, he offers his soul to the dark gods of the underworld for revenge which is granted swift and deadly.
The Elders are no more.

Thrown from his stead on his return to Hell, Darian crawls out of the blackness and into the modern world under the new name of Darkness and carrying an infection. An infection that will take mankind to a new level of evolution.

I thank you for your time.

Lee Pletzers

Outline:

The underlying theme of the book is family and what one man will endure to avenge his family's murder. In 27BC, Darian Farmer witnessed the death of his family before his eyes at the hands of the Elder's guards. In a time when magic was real and feared, no one dared go against the Elders until Darian stepped forth. He formed an army and took hundreds of men to an early grave in a battle they could not win.

Darian is drowned as punishment and as an example to all. Never go against the Elders. Darian cries out for God's help for vengeance but none comes. As the ocean water rushes over his head he turns to the dark lord and his cries are answered.

At the gates to Hell he makes a deal. The gatekeepers send him back to Earth, only he enters our time. He arrives as a shadow at the moment of a car accident and enters the body of a child. He knows he is in the wrong time but believes the Elders are still present and uses the body of the boy as a learning tool. Dr. Hayden Taylor, the child's father, still believes his son is in there somewhere, and studies Darkness (Darian) at his research compound.

After a time, Darkness has learnt all he needs to know and escapes the compound with the knowledge there are no Elders who hold great magic in this day and age; and using the 'gift' given to him by the shadow form in Hell, he could rule this world.

Agent Baxter and his team are sent after Darkness. Several times they get close. As the books opens, they tackle Darkness and trap him in his present body. Finally tasting success, their defences drop a little and Darkness escapes.

He takes the body of a company CEO and straight away puts a plan into action to infect the world, starting with the township of Opera Sands . He meets Nina, who will become the mother of his next child.

Dr. Hayden Taylor has been working with a scientific team to develop a cure for the infection. Finally the scientists feel they are successful. All tests show positive and a test subject shows no signs of infection. Dr. Taylor is called to check it out and while he is down in the basement labs, Darkness's team plant explosives in both buildings.

It turns out that the test subject is lying about the cure and he tries to pass on the infection to Dr. Hayden Taylor. They fight. Taylor loses at the same moment the buildings explode. A purple gas fills the room. It is the cure and gets released via an undamaged ventilation system. It forms a large light purple cloud in the sky. Lightning strikes inside and it grows larger.

The Elders show up when Darkness's plan is working perfectly. Darkness's infected have jet-black eyes. The Elders play a similar game and their infected have bright white eyes. Darkness and the Elders have rebuilt their army for a final war.

No one notices the rain falling from a purple cloud, nor do they notice the effect it is having on the dead.

I include a synopsis as well, but haven't added it here.

Hmm, yeah I'm not too much into 'dark fiction, but this does sound interesting. How many words writer113, that is how big is the novel, or is it still progressing?
