I have just opened submissions for my literary magazine Semaphore; seeing as the people around here seem to be interested in writing and publishing in a general sort of way, I thought I'd get myself some free advertising:

Semaphore Magazine !

Semaphore is a magazine that I hope will be home to a collection of fictional and non-fiction works that span genres. I call it a literary magazine, and I know that a lot of fantasy readers and writers have fought great battles (even if only in their heads) over that term, but I believe that literary merit can be held by any piece of writing, whether itâs about griffins or a man who wakes up one morning to discover he has been turned into a cockroach.

Failing that, of course, I’ll just look for stories that amuse me. But what the hell.

Contributors will be paid a token fee for their work (me = student = too damn poor to do the whole cents-per-word thing) and anything published in the Quarterly will be considered for publication in the Annual edition, a print compilation of the year’s best short stories, poems, essays and comics.

The first issue will come out in December.

Questions or comments can be directed to this thread, the guestbook on the page, or sent to semaphoremagazine@gmail.com .

Oh, and if any of you moneyed types have access to a credit card or a PayPal account, feel free to make a donation by clicking on the button under About Semaphore. Cheers.

-Marie

Argh, essays - so glad I'm on mid-semester break right now. And thanks for considering submitting, I can't wait to get your story.

On that note, I have to say that receiving submissions is more exciting than I'd imagined it would be. It's fantastic!

Thats so neat! I'm glad your enjoying the process. It would be interesting to see what you get in I imagine, hopefully it's not too hard to reject people tho!
As an extramural student I don't really get breaks other than between semesters, so I am looking forward big time to when all assignments are in and it's just exam prep before nano.

... and then NaNo. No breaks for us!

Yeah, I'm hoping that rejections don't become ugly. Here's to prefessionalism!

I am sure as long as you are being professional then the authors will follow suit (most of the time anyways). Rejection is just one of those things that happens, I think a lot of writers will by now realise that it's likely to happen a fair bit before acceptance, and I will keep that in mind when I submit to you ;-) lol

Well I dunno - if you go to that site that Dave linked to, a lot of the complainants are crying about rejection notes that are pretty damn professionally and politely written. I had to dig pretty deep to find some that I found offensive.

Very true. I think something you have to learn in this industry is that sometimes there just isn't a fit, and not to make a fuss when there is no need.

Ohhh man, I just received my first really unprofessional submission. The person just sent an email with an attachment (in a format I don't accept, moreover) and no cover letter whatsoever - not even a "hi." Not even a sign-off name so I know what this person is called.

Eek.

... It wasn't one of you guys, right? Please no?

I wouldn't know how to send something in a format that isn't accepted, so nope, it wasn't me either :-)

I see you've added a note about this on your site.

Through preparing my MS for submission, I've heard a few stories about this kind of thing.

It's like rock bands who make weird demands for concerts. It's not to be weird - it's to make sure the venue is reading the contract.

If submissions don't meet your-stated requirements at that first stage, you can safely assume they haven't read about what you want for your magazine (or don't care)

It's what my mother calls a self-weeding garden.

Keep that space for us, professional caring and prepared writers. ;-)
