Hey all, is there anyone working on trying to submit a novel or short story for publishing?

It would be great if you could share your experiences :-)

Yes please share :-)
My mother has been bugging me for awhile to look into the process but it all seems a bit daunting!

There are some really good books about it.

There is a kiwi writers source book that comes out every year with places to submit to. It's worth your time and you can probably find it in the library.

Our resource forum should have some of these things - I'll get an email to Kerryn and I'm sure they will appear.

Ok. I'm working on getting some resources together this week. We might have something up next weekend.

I've submitted an article once (to the Herald) but nope, no go. (It wasn't really a good article in my opinion anyway... I'm not a nonfiction sort, it was a writing assignment.)

I do, however, know the rules with general formatting and stuff (double spaced, cover letter, big margins) for sending manuscripts (MS), any questions, so feel free to ask. :)

Cool. Even if it didn get published, it's always good to know someone has been through part of that process. It's amazing what experience can tell you :-)

Well done for trying...we await news of the 2nd attempt!

Well actually Kerryn and I have been published, although what I wrote about in particular is so mortifyingly embaressing that it's not really anything I'm proud of.

We were once employed by our local newspaper to write articles of interest to young people. I can't actually remember what Kerryn wrote about, I but I would write about my debating team and my theatresports team at school. I have no idea what made me think anyone else would actually be interested in reading about it, but what was even crazier is that whatever Kerryn and I submitted, they published, word for word, and then they paid us for it!

Obviously not a very helpful story in the context of this forum, but funny all the same.

Angellic, your secret is out! That is funny. I mean, the 'debating team' - what were you thinking??? ;-)

Then again, I can't say anything, I have never had anything published!

*eagerly anticipates what Kerryn wrote about*

Oh yeah! We wrote, submitted, published and were paid. How could I forget?

What did I write about? Local college events, plays... it was so long ago. :)

Wow, cool experiences!! How did it start? Were you randomly approached by an editor, or did you submit something they liked and asked for more? *curious*

It was really cool. For a while we had articles in every week. :) I'm sure I've still got them in a box somewhere. I might be moving house soon so I'll keep an eye out for them!

I think it started with a contact through our college... our english teacher maybe? I don't think it was directly through the paper. I think the paper was looking for a youth/student part to it and maybe advertised or asked around schools? Angellic, can you verify any of this? lol.

I think we were paid $8-10 an article, which were probably about 500 words.

I honestly cannot remember how it started, but I think Keaz that you knew about and got me into it...

And we were paid $15 an article I think. Big money for a 14 year old!

I'm not even convinced that the editors even read what we wrote... I remember when they closed the column down and fired us ruthlessly too...

That's not what happened! It became a full page spread about youth/college events edited by someone from our college a year below us. :)

I've had one story, "Just So," published and re-printed by the ODT, and am currently in the middl of submitting another short story to various publishers.

Of course, I'm on the other end now, too, and I'm hoping that running a magazine myself will give me some insight into the business.

Oh, sorry; the ODT is short for the Otago Daily Times, the newspaper of - hope you're with me here - Otago, the region of the South Island of New Zealand in which I live. Currently it's frothing at the mouth over the student riots during the Undie 500 weekend.

Can I ask? is ophelia stornoway your name as a writer. It sounds very bookish. I like it. :)

Ophelia Stornoway is my general-use pseudonym for the internet; I'd never thought of using it as an actual pen-name! The first bit is from, as I'm sure anyone could guess, Hamlet's doomed girlfriend of the same name. I chose it becuase she is the first part I played in a production that I really felt proud of. Stornoway is the name of the ship that some of my ancestors came to New Zealand on.

Very cool name! I love the reasoning too. You could definatley use it as a pen name. Otago Daily Times, cool. :)
