What do you do if you're just sitting there and the words aren't coming out?

Think I'm going to go for a walk...catch you later. It's turned into a lovely day (at least here in Welly).

I find walks are always a really good way to deal with that situation. If i am stuck on something - regardless of whether its an assignment, a story, a poem, a script i find if i go for a walk and dont think about the issue, i end up figuring out a solution and by the time i'm home again i'm ready to get back into it.
Hope your walk helped :-)

Yeah, when I got back I really did feel refreshed, though that only got a couple of hundred words out of me. Still, it was a great wander around the coast.

strangely enough, and I've tried it and it works, all I do is start writing. Somehow, it always ends up fitting into the story, even if I have to remove a bit from when I start.

That's how I did it on the Nanowrimo challenge. A short story is harder I think... Anyway, I'm off.

short stories in a way are harder because you have to condense things down to only so many words, where as in a novel (as i discovered through nano) you can have some fun rambling and filling in back story etc and all sorts of things because there is such a large word count available to you in comparison to a short story.

That is so true, and I'm finding it out the hard way.

I guess I'll just have to ramble and try to rein it in a little later, and keep only what keeps the story going forward. That will probably be better, and faster than trying to do that as I go along.

I have a whole concept now, and I know all my four pieces of the story, but I keep the inner editor editing as I write and that's not going to work.

This is different from Nano, but there's no reason that I can't use the same techniques!

Enjoy your weekend.

I think you guys are hitting the nail on the head. I am finding it hard at the moment (though it is kinda late now). Might have to do a bit more, post my word count and have another crack at it in the morning.

If you can edit before you actually write the words it might help. I know that probably sounds strange but because you dont have so many words available sometimes its easier to just discard some sentences and ideas before they even hit the paper. Then you dont form any kind of attachment to them lol. I do find myself doing this naturally because a lot of the papers i have taken called for short stories so.... learning to let myself go and just write whatever came up was a challenge for me with NaNo!!!

Usually, the reason words aren't coming out are because I procrastinated. Hehe. So a lot of the time, all it takes is for me to go back and read what I wrote, and get back into writing.

Walking DOES help, it's quite relaxing, you're not distracted by things at home, and it's good to see lots of colours. The only time I ever walk is when I walk home from school, and school hasn't started yet, but I imagine I'll use the walking time to think pretty soon.

It sounds odd, but when words aren't coming out, I sometimes go and take a shower. Or meditate. Or read a book. (During last Nano, my words were just not flowing, and all I had was to read a nice book to get my words back again)
