Meditation for Increasing your Word Count
Posted by: cottreau
The brain is a complex piece of machinery, with about a hundred billion neurons firing in all kinds of patterns. You don't always get to choose the patterns.
Writing, as we all know, is a mental effort. It's something that you do with your brain, and no amount of pushing or pulling, or running and jumping will make the words come out any faster.
So, with something that is basically 100% mental, it makes sense to train your brain and get the neurons firing in pattern that you want them to.
Sit down for five minutes every day in a comfortable spot where you won't be interrupted (I know this is tough, especially for those of you with kids!). Relax and close your eyes. Breath slowly and regularly, a little deeper than normal. Imagine your thoughts as objects floating by, like boats on the water. The goal is to eventually not think at all and just sit quietly with your brain completely calm.
It isn't easy at all, since the brain has a habit of thinking about whatever it feels like, and the neurons are firing however they like. However, if you try this a few times, you will notice that the sessions get better and at least for a few moments, you are able to stop thinking and quiet your mind.
I find that I write much better after I sit down and meditate. It has a similar result to a good, hard workout in that you get to relax that little bit more, and it lets your mind focus that little bit more.
Give it a go and have fun.
