The Inertia of Starting
Posted by: andychilton
Sometimes, no matter how well intentioned you are, no matter how excited you are and no matter how many words are just bursting to come out ... that inertia just keeps you from a good start!
At least that's how I feel at the moment. I started at midnight on the 1st and did about 800 words. Then about 400 in the morning. By last night I wanted to be on 2,000 and by tonight I wanted to be on 4,000.
Ahem.
It's now 19:24 precisely and so I have 4 hrs and 36 minutes to make up 2,800 words, minus the time I spend writing this Klog post.
Now, a part of me says "It's easy, just start" but a part of me (my stomach) says "Wow man, you're hungry. Pizza sounds good!" And this is the eternal problem. It's where real life stops and writing starts, or should that be the other way around.
But no matter what gets in the way, just say to yourself "if I do 10 minutes now, I'll have less to do later." Each time you say that, you have less to do next time you sit down. Easy eh?
So once you finish reading this entry, do just 10 mins of writing and you can have another blog break ... go on, what are you waiting for?

The chatroom helped me emmensely on Day 2. I went on with the intention of seeing what was happinging, catching up on some forums and blog posts. Within a few minutes someone (Hm, this may have been me, however) proposed a word war.
When you know you *should* be writing and you know others doing the same challenge are going to be writing it's great incentive to join in, just for 10 or 15 minutes.

The 10 minutes at a time thing has been working really well actually. I sit down and do a 10 minute stint, and then rest for 10.
I am lucky that I have so much time, since I'm sitting on the north shore of Auckland while my wife is off taking a course, but the words are steadily piling up 10 minutes at a time.
