When Life Gets in the Way
Posted by: andychilton
At the start of this month, I wanted to write 50,000 words this month (obviously). Then, by the 15th I wanted to get 25,000 words. Now, I'm wondering if I'll get any more than the 5,000 I'm currently on.
It seems that 'life' has taken over this month and I won't be able to finish SoCNoC this year.
Even though this is fairly sad, a number of things mean that it's not as bad as I first thought it would be. For starters, I have done two NaNo's and the first SoCNoC before so I already have three (uncompleted) novels under my belt. If it was my first time, I'd be more disappointed.
It also means that instead of plunging into the words and going crazy to finish it, I decided to say "Nope" and actually come up for air for a while. The past few days have been wonderfully relaxing, taking it easy, sorting a few things out and generally refreshing.
Every so often you need to do that, take a break and come up for air. Unfortunately, it's sad that it occurred during June.
But the best thing about these challenges are, there'll be another one right around the corner. Already I'm looking forward to NaNo in November and of course, SoCNoC again next year. Whilst this might seem premature to some of you guys still writing, it just turned out that way for me.
Good luck to all of you guys still going and I'll see you again during the next noveling month, wherever, whenever that might be.

Oh well never mind andy, you can't win 'em all. Wondered where you had got to, and thought 'life' may have grabbed you by the throat. I have been fortunate to get away with telling people I have something more important to do. You can do that when you are semi-retired. :)

This is the coolest thing. Andy is bummed out that he can't finish his novel THIS MONTH.
I am always amazed at Nanoers and SoCNoCers when they are at gatherings. I often hear, "I've only written one novel." or "This is only my second."
It tells me how far out of the ordinary this is - how many people you know have even written one? It's a rare thing and so, so cool.

Andy, I hear you! This month has turned out to be totally disastrous in terms of finding time to write, the business just seemed to snowball. I got stonkered by a combination of lack of time and lack of direction for my novel, and in the end it was just getting so stressful that I've pretty much chucked in the towel. I don't feel defeated though, I've come out with a clear goal to simply finish my story this year (preferably before NaNo!) and SocNoc has really got me back into the story and thinking about it again. I think that even the SocNocs or Nano's that we don't 'win', we still come away having learned something, and achieved something, and rearing to go for the next challenge!
