Be Challenged
Kiwi Writer's first birthday was followed by a month of short story challenges and ventures into Dvorak.
Thank you to everyone who sent birthday wishes our way. We celebrated with a festive new banner and we're looking forward to more images to highlight events throughout the year.
Over the last couple months there has been an interesting discussion thread going on about the Dvorak keyboard. A few Kiwi Writer members have tried it out and made the switch.
The second annual Waitangi Weekend Word Wace was a smaller affair this year with 11 participants and 1 winner. Congratulations to madscientist for reaching beyond the 7,500 words goal to reach 8,122 words. Three other participants posted word counts with redfox almost reaching the goal with 5,351 words.
February closed with the member challenge Urban Legend Madness. One of the great things about being a writer is all the different genres and subject matter we get to explore. Wikipedia defines an Urban Legend as "similar to a modern folklore consisting of stories thought to be factual by those circulating them." There are many ways that stories, both fact and fiction, are told. 3 participants explored the Urban Legend within the 5,000 word goal of the challenge. Congratulations to Cassie who won the challenge.
Whether it's writing or editing on your agenda for March there are challenges to help. March Fantasy Madness is a member challenge here at Kiwi Writers with a goal of 10,000 words of fantasy fiction. 7 writers have already taken up the challenge.
Through The 6,000 Word Easter Challenge Kiwi Writers keeps encouraging you to write short, sharp stories. There's even an advanced part to the challenge for those who want to push themselves a little bit harder.
Outside of Kiwi Writers there are two great challenges: National Novel Editing Month and 70 Days of Sweat.
National Novel Editing Month begins on March 1st and you can join other writers working for 50 hours on their manuscripts within the month deadline.
70 Days of Sweat also begins on March 1st. The sponsors Diana Peterfreund, HelenKay Dimon, Jaci Burton, Larissa Ione, Lauren Dane, Portia Da Costa, and Shiloh Walker invite you to write a book in 70 days with a word count anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 words. They have 184 participants and you could be next.
If you've written nothing so far this year don't make another excuse. Pick up some writing prompts and go for it! If you're lacking inspiration begin our writers group crawl and get back in the mood.
